It Is OK to Be Bad at Stuff

Do you like how descriptive I am? My last post was about “trying things,” and this one is about being bad “at stuff.”

Writing is hard. Finding the right words in your head and translating them into cohesive, pretty sentences on a page (digital or otherwise) is hard. But I do it anyway, because as Yoda said, “Do or do not. There is no try.”

Words to live by, people.

Which is all to say that this babbling introduction is relevant to what I’ve been thinking about recently, because this is a story about failure.

Trying Things: January

January has always been a weird month for me. It’s the start of a new year, so I find it confusing to reflect on everything I did in January at the end of the year: Wait, what? I did that this year? Also, it’s my birthday month, so I have to grapple with my annual mini-crisis of being another year older and feeling perpetually ~17.

With all the turmoil and reflection that accompanies the new year, I wasn’t sure how I wanted to approach 2018 by the end of December. Then, a week (or two) into January, I came up with a challenge for myself: I would try something new – anything, really – at least once every month for the entire year.

The Early Bird Gets the Chicken Minis

If sleep and I were a Facebook status, we’d be It’s Complicated.

(I know, that’s so 2010, but you get what I mean.)

I used to be able to sleep until 3pm on weekends, no problem. This may have been due to my standard sleeping habits, starting with the night before my first day of high school, when I stayed up past midnight to finish a project I definitely didn’t need to work that hard on before waking up early for school the next day.

Beyond Showing Up

A few months ago, I attended an awesome marketing conference in Boston. Speakers from Michelle Obama to Billie Jean King and Issa Rae graced the main stage, and at the end of 4 days of walking back and forth throughout the conference center, I was about ready to collapse. My phone was really proud of me for getting so many steps in (thanks for the support, Samsung Health!)

What struck me afterward, reflecting back on the experience, was that several speakers echoed an idea I’ve been hearing a lot recently: that we have to “show up” in order to be successful.

Hiking the Spookiest Mountain

On sunny days – which are few – the mountain could almost pass for friendly.

Today is one of those rare days, sky completely devoid of clouds so that we have a clear view of the summit from the recently-rebuilt lodge at the mountain’s base.

Spencer and I power-hike (for us, at least), largely motivated by large packs of kids following their leaders up the trail. Nothing against the youth of today, but we’re happy to get ahead of the mass of people, disappearing into the woods until the only sounds are our own breath and the wind through the trees. Our breathing is labored, but our muscles feel strong.

When You’ve Been Quiet For Too Long

How do you find the motivation to get back into something after setting it aside?

Most recently, I got back into working out.

It started with running after months of no exercise, followed by several weeks of physical therapy in an attempt to get my left knee to stop throwing a fit as if I were 85 and not 23.

I started getting up at 6 a.m., the sky outside brightening later and later until I was heading out the door in complete darkness.

Wander Weekly #11: Labor of Love

Wander Weekly is a weekly post on what I’m consuming at the moment.

Long weekends are often lazy weekends. While I love being lazy, I’m stoked to be traveling to Spokane tomorrow, then on to Banff, for a week of hiking and camping and crystalline lakes.

That means no posts next week, but (hopefully) lots of writing time to get back into digging deep in time for fall.
